Is September a good time to visit Munnar?

Yes. September is one of the most underrated months in Munnar. The southwest monsoon is fading, so the tea estates, grasslands and waterfalls are at their greenest, while crowds and room rates are still low. October and November stay green too, but the northeast monsoon often brings afternoon showers, so plan sightseeing for the mornings.

How cold is Munnar in December and January?

Winter in Munnar usually starts in November, and the coldest mornings come around late December and the first weeks of January. In the higher estates such as Chenduvarai, Sevenmalai and Lakshmi, temperatures can drop to around zero, leaving a thin layer of frost on the grass and tea bushes. Munnar town itself is milder, but nights are cold enough that you will want a proper jacket.

This is also peak season. Hotels fill up from early December, and the rush usually continues until early March, with weekends the busiest. If you are travelling for Christmas or New Year, book your stay and cab four to six weeks ahead.

Is Munnar good to visit in summer (March to May)?

Yes. While the plains of Kerala and Tamil Nadu are hot, Munnar stays mild, which is why April and May are busy with families on school holidays. Mornings are the clearest part of the day; pre-monsoon showers become more frequent in May. Note that Eravikulam National Park is usually closed until the end of March for the calving season, so check the reopening date if the Nilgiri Tahr is on your list.

Is it safe to visit Munnar in the monsoon?

It can be, with the right planning. June and July bring the heaviest rain, thick mist and dramatic waterfalls, and far fewer tourists. But when the weather department issues an orange or red alert, the Idukki district administration often bans night travel on hill roads (typically 7 pm to 6 am) and may stop off-road jeep safaris. Roads such as the Gap Road near Munnar can close because of rockfall risk.

If you visit in the monsoon, travel in daylight, keep a buffer day, stay away from waterfall edges and riverbanks, and use a driver who knows the roads.
