How far is Alleppey from Munnar Kerala?

Alleppey (Alappuzha) sits on the coast, while Munnar is high in the Western Ghats of Idukki district, so this is one of the classic hills-to-backwaters drives of any Kerala trip. Depending on the route and the exact pickup and drop points, the road distance is about 160 to 175 km. Cab operators commonly quote around 165 km and a little under five hours, but plan for five to six hours with a lunch break. The first stretch is a slow descent through tea estates and cardamom country; once you reach the plains, the roads widen and the pace picks up.

Which is the best route from Munnar to Alleppey?

There are two practical routes, and both are good. Your driver will usually choose based on traffic and road conditions on the day.

  • Via Adimali and Kothamangalam (Kochi side)The most common route. It follows the same ghat road you may have used coming up from Kochi, past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, then joins the busier highways towards Alappuzha. Good if you want a coffee or lunch stop near Kochi.
  • Via Thodupuzha and KottayamA quieter inland route through rubber and spice country. It suits travellers who want to stop in Kottayam for lunch or who plan to stay at Kumarakom instead of Alleppey town.

If you came up from the coast, our Kochi to Munnar guide covers the waterfall stops on the ghat section in detail.

Can you go from Munnar to Alleppey by bus or train?

Yes by bus, but not directly by train. KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) runs a few buses a day from Munnar towards Alappuzha, and more frequent services connect via Kottayam or Ernakulam. Buses are cheap but slower than a cab, with stops along the way, and luggage space is limited. Check current timings at the Munnar KSRTC depot or on the KSRTC booking site before you travel, as schedules change.

Munnar has no railway station. To use the train, you first travel by road to Ernakulam or Kottayam, then take a train to Alappuzha. With luggage and two changes, this rarely saves time over a direct cab, so most families and couples on a Kerala tour package go by road the whole way.

What is there to do in Alleppey after Munnar?

Alleppey, often called the Venice of the East, is the backwater half of most Kerala tourism circuits. The main draws are a houseboat (kettuvallam) cruise, a canoe or shikara ride through the narrow village canals, the paddy fields of Kuttanad, which lie below sea level, and a sunset at Alappuzha Beach. If you visit in August, the Nehru Trophy snake boat race on Punnamada Lake is a highlight.

Houseboats range from simple one-bedroom boats to large luxury boats for groups. Check what your package includes (meals, air conditioning, cruise duration) before you book, and book early for December and January.
