How far is Munnar from Chennai, and how long does it take?

By road, Chennai to Munnar is roughly 580 to 600 km, depending on which ghat you use to climb into the hills. Allow 11 to 12 hours of actual driving, plus meal and rest breaks. The first part, down the highway past Villupuram and Trichy, is fast and easy. The last stretch, once you leave the Tamil Nadu plains and climb into Munnar, Kerala, is slow, winding and best done in daylight.

That is why we usually suggest treating the journey as two days, not one. A night in Trichy or Dindigul breaks the drive neatly and lets you reach Munnar by early afternoon on the second day, fresh enough to enjoy the views on the way up.

Which road route is best from Chennai to Munnar, Kerala?

Both main routes follow the same highway from Chennai through Villupuram and Trichy to Dindigul. After that, you choose how to climb into the hills.

  • Route 1: via Theni and BodimettuDindigul, Theni, Bodinayakanur, the Bodimettu ghat, Poopara and Lockhart Gap into Munnar. This is the most direct choice for most drivers. Fill fuel at Theni or Bodi before the climb.
  • Route 2: via Udumalpet and ChinnarDindigul, Palani, Udumalpet, then the Munnar-Udumalpet road through Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary and Marayoor. It is a little longer but beautiful, passing the dry rain-shadow forests of Chinnar before the green tea country begins.
  • Coming backMany travellers go up one way and return the other, so they see both sides of the hills on one Kerala trip.

Whichever route you pick, avoid driving the ghat sections after dark. Fog can settle on the higher bends in the evening, wild elephants cross some of these roads, and night travel in the hills can be restricted during heavy rain alerts. Our guide to getting around Munnar safely explains how we plan drives in the hills.

Can you reach Munnar from Chennai by train?

Yes, but not all the way. Munnar has no railway station, and neither does the rest of Idukki district. The most practical rail option is an overnight train from Chennai to Aluva, about 120 km from Munnar. Daily trains such as the Alleppey Express and the Trivandrum Mail run from Chennai Central towards Kerala and stop there. From Aluva, a pre-booked cab takes you up through the hills to Munnar.

On the Tamil Nadu side, Bodinayakanur is the closest station, about 69 km from Munnar. A Chennai to Bodinayakanur service has run on selected days of the week since the line reopened in 2023, but there are far fewer trains, so check the current timetable on IRCTC before planning around it.

Is it better to fly from Chennai to Kochi for Munnar?

If you are short on time, yes. Flights from Chennai to Kochi are short, and Kochi airport is about 110 km from Munnar by road. You can be in the tea hills on the same day, which also makes Kochi a natural start and end point for a longer Kerala tour package with the backwaters. Our Kochi to Munnar guide covers that drive and the best stops on the way.

Madurai airport is another option if you want to combine Munnar with Tamil Nadu temples, using the Theni and Bodimettu road into the hills.
